Johanna Zanon (b. 1988, FR) is a curator and researcher, who lives and works in Oslo, Norway.

She holds a PhD in history from the University of Oslo, a graduate diploma from École Nationale des Chartes in Paris, and an MA in art history from École Pratique des Hautes Études in Paris.

​

After a postdoctoral fellowship at University of Oslo, she has built upon her interdisciplinary research skills to develop her curatorial practice. In 2020, she curated the exhibition As Handsome as the Chance Encounter at RAM Galleri in Oslo. That year, she also participated in the Live or Buy residency on ecologies of consumption at Praksis Oslo as a curator.

 

Since then, her practice has become increasingly collective. The public art project Critical Fashion Walk (2020-ongoing) epitomises this tendency. It aims to build a community around the project to co-create walks that explore Oslo fashion critically. It also ties in with an ongoing reflection on curatorial formats beyond the exhibition format.

​

In addition, she has curated public programmes, including After After Munch as Clarion Hotel Oslo’s art concierge (2019-2020), based on the hotel’s permanent collection. Currently employed as a programme curator at Norske Kunsthåndverkere, the Norwegian Association for Arts and Crafts, she conceives the Annual Craft Exhibition’s public programmes.

Her writing has been published in peer-reviewed journals and collective volumes, as well as exhibition catalogues, and art magazines. Recently, she edited a special issue on "Fashion Labour" in International Journal of Fashion Studies (2021).

 

She has lectured at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts, University of Oslo, Jissen Women's University in Tokyo, and Institut Français de la Mode in Paris. In Spring 2015, she was a visiting scholar at the European Institute at Columbia University and the following spring at the Graduate School of Economics at Osaka University.

She is a member of the steering committee of the fashion research network Culture[s] de Mode (Paris) and a member of Fashion Studies Alliance (New York). She is a member of professional associations the Norwegian Association of Curators and Kunsthistorisk forening – the Art History Association in Norway.
